Lake Stevens Board Approves New Elementary Boundaries
At the March 26 School Board meeting the board of directors approved the Citizens Boundary Committee’s first choice recommendation for the new boundaries for Sunnycrest, Highland and Mt. Pilchuck elementary schools.
Superintendent David Burgess praised the committee’s work, “This committee did an amazing job of researching the data, applying the guidelines, and working together as a team to develop a comprehensive and thoughtful recommendation.”
Team members from the committee including Keith Nielsen, J.J. McDermott, Jo-Ann Sickles, Jeff Sickles, Fernando Neal, Karen Tadio and Kevin Coiley all had a share in the presentation of information to the board. In rank order, they reviewed three plans the committee had developed and described the guiding principles and rationale behind each plan. Additionally, information regarding bus routes, current and future developments, and natural boundaries were taken into account. The one and a half hour presentation included many questions by board members with answers provided by committee members.
School Board President Mari Taylor remarked, “Boundary decisions are always difficult since they affect many children and their families. The board is so grateful for the thoughtful consideration and extraordinary effort put forth by the Boundary Committee to generate practical solutions to balancing enrollment at our elementary schools.”
The committee of over 50 began their work in January and met at least once a week through March 26 in order to complete their work for the targeted presentation date.
The Citizens Boundary Committee was facilitated by consultant David Toyer, and was supported by school administrators.
The new elementary boundary map is posted on the Lake Stevens School District’s website at www.lkstevens.wednet.edu/boundary. The district’s next steps include informing families of the boundary changes and developing a housing plan for Sunnycrest Elementary students as they transition to portables in 2008-09 while their school is modernized. Parents will be notified by April 25 of all housing changes for next school year.
