The men and women of Lake Stevens Fire department look for ways to support our students and community and to collaborate with our schools year-round.
On the opening day of school firefighters and EMTs are out at elementary sites directing traffic and meeting children as they get off the bus, helping them find their way to their new classrooms.
Their education focus, Risk Watch, teaches elementary students how to be safe in their homes, at play and in public. The fire marshal and other trained members of the district are in classrooms teaching throughout the year. Additional educational opportunities occur throughout the year at various school events where students experience how to exit a burning house through the “Smoke House” demonstration.
On the first Saturday in December, firefighters assist at the Community Education’s Dickens Fair collecting food and monetary donations for the community food bank – this past year over $450 dollars and 30 boxes of food were collected.
Extra ordinary assistance was provided this year over the winter holidays when staffing is low. Boilers in three schools burst and fire fighters stayed and assisted with the pumping and drying of buildings throughout the course of the events – greatly minimizing damage to our schools.
The fire chief and assistant chief are members of the district’s Safe Schools Team – they attended an in-depth week-long training in Wisconsin provided by the Department of Justice. The training focused on Safe Schools Interagency Team Planning and included members from the school district, police department, and the Snohomish County Prosecuting Attorney’s office.
Partnering with our district in the areas of education, prevention and intervention is part of their daily work with our students, administrators and parents and we most appreciative of their on-going support and can-do attitude.
