Alicen Burke, MA, CCC-SLP
National Board Certified Teacher
ECYA / Exceptional Needs Specialist
I've been serving Mt. Pilchuck's speech and language pathology needs since 2008. I'm excited for another year that promises lots of fun and growth as we develop improved communication skills. We have amazing programs at our school! We are constantly reevaluating and adapting our practices to meet best practices and our individual students' needs.
What I do: Over my career, I have provided functional communication, speech, language, literacy, voice, fluency (a.k.a. stuttering), swallowing evaluations and therapy to children and adults. I have primarily served the school-age population, some birth-to-three, middle school, and high school transition work, as well as, working with in-patient adults across northwest Washington. I have frequently mentored new SLPs in the district and accept SLP interns on occasion.
At Mt. Pilchuck, I currently serve the students from kindergarten to grade 5 in general education and the students in our Life Skills program. I particularly enjoy this placement because we have a strong team of professionals who synergize well on behalf of our students. We also have a lot of fun together! Most of all, I love the population of students at our school. They consistently challenge me and bring joy to my work experiences.
About Me: I am a native Oregonian, raised in Washington. I obtained a master's degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders from Western Washington University in 2007. After that, I completed my ASHA certificate of clinical competency at the Hearing Speech and Deafness Center. I began serving the school population in 2008. I also earned my National Board Certification as an Exceptional Needs Specialist in 2014.
In 2015, I was selected as a Teacher Leader for the National Board ATLAS resource! My video portfolio entry submitted for National Board Certification was selected for inclusion in ATLAS (Accomplished Teaching, Learning, and Schools), a password-protected online resource that will showcase accomplished teachers in action. I am honored to be considered among the ranks of so many talented educators and I feel very fortunate to work among many of the best teachers around.
I love my job and I love working at Mt. Pilchuck! When I am not working, I enjoy art, music, movies, knitting, painting, kayaking, cycling, yoga and spending time with my partner, Matt. I also have two beautiful Abyssinian kittens who keep me laughing.
