• Beginning Band FAQs

    Here is a list of the most frequently asked questions about Band.

    Q – Do I need to know how to play an instrument before joining band?

    A – NO! 6th grade band is a beginning band.  During band class you will learn how to play your instrument, how to read music, and everything else you’ll need to know to be successful in band.

    Q – Which instruments can I choose from?

    A - You can choose between the flute, clarinet, alto saxophone, tenor sax (with permission), French horn (with permission), trumpet, baritone horn, trombone, percussion(bells to start) (with permission), or electric/upright bass (with permission). You MUST contact your band teacher for permission if you wish to play percussion, electric/upright bass, or any instrument NOT on this list.

    Q – Do I need to have my own instrument?

    A – Yes, you will need to either own or rent your own instrument. If you own an instrument please have it looked over at a music store BEFORE school begins to be sure it works!  If you are renting it will cost between $20 - $50 per month (approximately) depending on the instrument.

    Q – Which music stores should I go to?

    A – We work closely with Ted Brown Music. You can also rent from Kennelly Keys in Lynnwood or Big Foot Music in Arlington.

    Q – What if I want to play percussion/drums?

    A – Mrs. Gamage allows 8 percussionists each year. These students MUST begin on bells (small metal barred xylophones).  No drums will be played until students pass the bell playing tests mid-way through the year. Once they pass the test they can begin playing drums along with the bells. Teacher permission is required. All interested students MUST contact their teacher prior to choosing an instrument. Final decisions may not be made until September.

    Q – What other supplies do I need?

    A – All students will need to purchase the band method book Sound Innovations Book 1cleaning supplies, and (for clarinet and saxophone players) a box of reeds size #2.
