    Elementary Music Curriculum Pilot Notification

    May 2021

Lake Stevens School District is in the process of formally piloting a core music elementary curriculum in grades K-5 at all of our elementary schools. Our elementary music teachers have reviewed our current curriculum for over a year. The goal of the piloting process will be to adopt a curriculum that allows for a horizontal and vertical curriculum in all schools that is aligned to current standards and that is culturally responsive. In addition, our review team is evaluating current music instruments available in our classes to make sure all students have equitable access to core grade level instruments.

Savvas Interactive Music by Silver Burdett with Alfred is a fully digital program developed jointly by Savvas and Alfred Music and updated in 2017 with more songs, more activities, test bank questions, and more great content.

Savvas Interactive Music gives teachers access to a variety of age-appropriate activities to enhance music learning. Motivating resources provide options to engage K-5 students in concept-based instruction with online interactive activities, content for classroom projection, downloadable print materials, music notation, audio, video, animated instruction, and other activities.

The Lake Stevens School District Curriculum Commission will consider feedback from the community, students, and staff members to make a decision about the instructional materials at the completion of the pilot, which is scheduled for the end of the current school year.

    Elementary Reading Pilot Notification

    May 2020

Lake Stevens School District is in the process of formerly piloting an addition to our elementary reading curriculum in grades K-5 at all of our elementary schools. The personalized online reading instruction is from Curriculum Associates. Our district adopted the reading diagnostic from Curriculum Associates three years ago. This pilot will allow us to consider adopting the supplemental personalized reading lessons that address each student’s reading needs as identified by the reading diagnostic that we use in our district. This supplemental reading program would be in addition to our current core curriculum Wonders.

i-Ready Personalized Instruction provides students with lessons based on their individual skill level and needs, so your student can learn at a pace that is just right for them.

i-Ready Reading is an online program that helps students of all ages become thoughtful, analytical readers. Grounded in best practice, it engages students as they build new skills and learn to access rigorous, culturally responsive texts. Its personalized instruction adjusts the lesson path to meet every reader at their individual level, enabling teachers to provide a personalized learning experience for each student.

    i-Ready Reading includes:

    • Lessons that teach foundational skills such as phonological awareness, high-frequency words, and phonics to help students understand their connection to reading
    • Vocabulary lessons at earlier grade levels that teach words researchers have identified as the most essential to reading success
    • Instruction for third-grade and above that helps students build word learning strategies that maximize vocabulary acquisition
    • Reading comprehension instruction that is designed to motivate learners of all ages as they grow accustomed to reading independently

The Lake Stevens School District Curriculum Commission will consider the feedback from the community, students and staff members to make a decision about the instructional materials at the completion of the pilot which is scheduled to be completed by the end of the current school year.

    Physical Science Pilot Notification

    November 2020

Lake Stevens School District is in the process of piloting curriculum for the ninth-grade Physical Science course at Cavelero Mid High School. The Curriculum Commission will consider the feedback from the community, students and staff members to make a decision about the instructional materials at the completion of the pilot.

The curriculum we are piloting has been developed by our team of science educators at Cavelero. The decision to develop our own curriculum followed a curriculum review process throughout the 2018-19 school year and summer where we learned that commercially available curricula that had been updated to reflect the new science learning standards in Washington were not effective for our ninth-graders. Instead, they were adaptations of more advanced elective curricula and left our students struggling for comprehension. The team is very experienced at maximizing the available resources and developing lesson content that supports our ninth-grade learners employing current best practices for science learning.
