Inclement Weather Preparedness
Conditions Covered: Freezing Temperatures, Windstorms, Snow Events
Weather Monitoring and Communication
The District Safety and Security Specialist closely monitors potential inclement weather and provides timely, detailed updates to district staff. Information is gathered from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and other reliable weather sources to support informed decision making and proactive planning.
Generator Readiness and Testing
All district generators undergo monthly testing, which includes startup verification and inspection of fuel and coolant levels to ensure reliable operation during power outages.
Generator Freeze Protection Monitoring
In 2025, Generator Freeze Protection Notification systems were installed on generators throughout the district. These systems monitor utility power, generator power and ambient space temperatures, and automatically notify district admin staff when temperatures drop to 55 degrees, allowing for early intervention.
Building Occupancy Management During Freezing Conditions
When freezing temperatures are anticipated, building identified as “at risk” are kept in occupied mode. This helps maintain interior temperatures and significantly reduces the risk of frozen pipes.
Pipe Freeze Prevention Measures
To promote adequate air circulation around plumbing, ceiling tiles are temporarily moved where needed to expose pipes. Cabinets under sinks are also opened to allow warm air to circulate and reduce the likelihood of freezing.
Preventative Maintenance for Winter Equipment
Annual preventative maintenance tasks are assigned to Grounds staff to service winter-related equipment, including snow blowers and ice melt spreaders, ensuring all equipment is operational prior to seasonal weather conditions.
District Vehicle Preparation
District vehicles are inspected and prepared in advance for snow plowing and sanding operations to ensure timely response during winter weather events.
Irrigation System Winterization
Grounds staff blow out irrigation lines on all athletic fields to prevent damage from freezing temperatures.
Dry Sprinkler System Maintenance
Dry sprinkler systems are drained and secured to prevent freezing and potential system failure during cold weather.
Tree and Grounds Safety Inspections
Facilities staff conduct districtwide tree inspections to identify and address potential hazards, such as weakened or damaged limbs, especially in advance of windstorms and heavy snow.
