Construction Update

Lake Stevens School District is moving forward with construction of a new gymnasium at Hillcrest Elementary, made possible through the voter-approved 2025 School Construction Bond. This project will expand learning spaces for students and increase opportunities for school and community use.

Project Timeline

  • Work begins: Spring Break, April 2026
  • Estimated completion: Winter 2027

Why this Project is Needed

Hillcrest currently uses a multipurpose room for PE, lunch, assemblies, and other school activities. As the school has grown, this space no longer fully meets the needs of students and staff.

The new gymnasium will:

  • Provide a dedicated space for PE classes
  • Allow the school to better accommodate the large number of students served during lunches 
  • Improve flexibility for assemblies, events, and student activities
  • Expand opportunities for community facility use

Benefits for Students and the Community

  • A full-size gym will allow for two sections of PE to take place at the same time
  • The multipurpose room will have greater flexibility once PE classes move to the gym
  • Expanded facility space will increase opportunities for community recreation and youth programs

Placement & Site Considerations

The new gym will be constructed very near the existing school building but will remain a separate structure. The facility will include restrooms, a staff office, and storage space to support both school and community activities. This placement supports afterschool community use, allowing access to the gym without opening the entire school. 

Construction of the new gym will require removal of the current softball field and the small playground at Hillcrest. The district plans to replace the softball field at another location within the district as part of ongoing facilities improvements. 

The playground equipment, including the well-known dinosaur, has reached the end of its usable life and will not be replaced due to age and safety considerations.
