English Language Arts (ELA) for Grades 9-11
Lake Stevens School District is in the process of starting a pilot for grades 9-11 English Language Arts curriculum. The programs will be piloted Nov. 2022 - March 2023 at Cavelero Mid High School and Lake Stevens High School. As these pilots begin, you may notice a change in your child’s curriculum, but not in the learning. When piloting the curriculum, students and families may notice more engagement with the digital platform of the piloted curriculum.
The two curricula we are piloting are McGraw Hill’s StudySync and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt’s Into Literature. These two curricula were chosen to be piloted by a core team of ninth- through eleventh-grade English teachers after a thorough curriculum review process in the spring of the 2021-2022 school year and fall of the 2022-2023 school year. During the pilot period, the teacher adoption committee will consider how the different programs operate in a daily classroom environment for both teachers and students, as well as how they effectively support instruction aligned with the Common Core State Standards and effective and inclusive instructional practices.
Family and community feedback is essential in this process, and we welcome your input. You can access digital versions of the programs and an online survey to provide feedback. If you have a student in grades 9-11 of the core English classes with a teacher participating in the pilot, you can also choose to review the curriculum from your student’s account. Starting Nov. 21, 2022, a hardcopy of the piloted curricula is available for your review at your student’s school in the main office. Online surveys will be accessible until March 10, 2023.
Survey responses are anonymous. These responses will help inform the recommendation our 9-11 ELA teacher adoption committee makes about the adoption of materials. The committee is scheduled to make a proposal to the Curriculum Commission and a recommendation to the Lake Stevens School Board in the spring.
The teacher adoption committee and Lake Stevens School District Curriculum Commission, which includes members from our teachers, administrators, school board and families, will consider the feedback collected from impacted parties to make a decision about the instructional materials at the completion of the pilot.
If families have any questions regarding the curriculum, please reach out to your student’s teacher. If you have any questions about the piloting process, please feel free to contact Mike Snow, Executive Director of Curriculum & Instruction at 425-335-1500 or email@example.com.
