Health Services Mission Statement

The goal of Health Services is to ensure the medical needs of all students are met.  This shall be accomplished by working with the student, his/her family, LSSD staff, health care providers and the community through open communication, ongoing education and providing a positive working relationship to maintain correct health information about each student.

To attain this, our school nurses are committed to:

• Developing, implementing and evaluating individual care plans for each student. These plans are an ongoing guide to monitoring student health needs. The needs identified shall have health care provided under the direction of the School Nurse and written Physician orders, include medication administration, health care procedures and services to assist each student in having a quality and safe school experience.
• Monitoring each school's Health Room procedures and services, maintaining high health care standards for all the students, LSSD staff and the LSSD community. This shall be accomplished by records, audits, ongoing staff education and training, and adhering to the health and safety standards set by regulations, policies and laws that govern the LSSD and Washington State Public Schools.
• Maintaining and enforcing the Laws and Regulations set by the Nursing Practice Act, LSSD, Washington State Government and the Federal Government and meeting the needs of our students, LSSD staff and the LSSD community in regard to school health care.

What do school nurses do?
The Lake Stevens School District has 12 school nurses who provide a wide range of health services to the schools they serve. These nurses work in the respective buildings with varying hours per week, depending on student population and the special needs of that school. Additional time is spent working on special education evaluations. Below are several of the frequent duties of our Lake Stevens School nurses:

• They develop emergency care plans for students with life threatening health conditions, such as severe allergies to peanuts or bee stings, severe asthma, or diabetics with insulin reaction.
• They educate and provide appropriate staff trainings across the district and various departments.
• They oversee staff administering medications to students and care for the ill or injured students in the school setting.
• They are responsible for the health assessment of students being evaluated to receive special education services through the Lake Stevens School District.
• They are responsible for organizing state-mandated vision and hearing screenings and assessments.
• They are alert to any possible communicable disease outbreaks in the school setting and work closely with the Snohomish Health District.
• They serve as a liaison between the school, the home and medical or other community resources.
• They provide health education to students.
• School nurses are responsible for close management of diabetic students and other health conditions in the school setting.
• They have a current Registered Nurse license or a Licensed Practical Nurse.  School nurses have current First Aid, CPR, and AED training
