Welcome to room 13! I'm looking forward to developing a strong partnership with each of you as we work together, providing your child a solid foundation in reading, writing, and mathematical skills. Hillcrest truly is a great place to learn, and I'm sure that you'll thoroughly enjoy getting to know our school and community. Our teachers are constantly striving to improve our skills, and we work hard to instill the love of learning in our kids. After all, we're building life long learners.
Here's some important information about our 2nd Grade program.
Homework: Yes, your child has homework!
Reading – Reading is fun! Our goal is to create students who LOVE to read. When we read, we take adventures and learn amazing facts. Our enthusiasm tends to be contagious! Show your child how important reading is by explaining how you use it in your daily life. Please have your child practice reading at home 20 minutes an evening. Second graders are expected to read at home at least 300 minutes a month. Please turn in our monthly R.A.H. (Reading At Home) calendars. Establishing a daily reading routine is essential for your child’s growth.
Mathematics – Every Wednesday a math homework packet will be sent home. These practice pages are from our Math Expressions curriculum and will be a review of what we’ve done in class. Your child needs access to a “Homework Helper” that is going to support them. If the “Homework Helper” has any questions, please give Mrs. Havens a phone call. We’ll clear it up. Students have 1 week to complete the math packet. Please return the homework packet the following Wednesday.
Computers – Every 2nd grader in our class will have access to a Chromebook. We practice reading using our Wonders Reading Program on line, and we'll use Raz Kids. We'll also use Xtra Math and Ten Marks for skills and mathematical thinking practice. During the spring, we'll research animals and write about them. We’ll be going to designated web sites on the internet to learn more about the animal we’re researching.
