Alternative Learning Option (ALO)

The Alternative Learning Experience (ALE) is public education, available to all public school districts and public charter schools in Washington state, where some or all of the instruction is delivered outside of a regular classroom schedule. The intent of ALE is to ensure that students have educational opportunities designed to meet their individualized needs. ALE follows all public education requirements as well as Chapter 392-550 WAC.

What is it?

Enrichment instruction for part-time students whose parents primarily homeschool
On-site classes that are aligned with Washington State Standards, taught by certificated teachers

Profile of student

Students who are being homeschooled by a family member
Parents will need to remain onsite with their child for the duration of classes. Students in grades 6-9 can earn a certificate of independence to be on campus independently.

What is it?

Online classes provided by Stride Learning Solutions, with general education courses, specially designed instruction, academic support, and social-emotional support from certificated LSSD mentor and a paraeducator
Classes almost solely online and self-paced; some live instruction via Google Meets

Profile of student

Has relatively strong reading skills since most of the instruction is through text-heavy, online modules
Is an independent student who doesn't need as much 1:1 support

Grades 9-12: Crossroads High School (Granite Falls)

What is it?

In-person or online alternative learning high school for students grades 9-12 that result in either a diploma or a GED
Full academic program, including courses such as Journalism, Leadership, Ignite, Voice of Youth, etc. with transportation provided

Profile of student

Students in 9-12 grades who have not been successful in traditional school or who thrive with more adult support and smaller class sizes
May be below, on, or above grade level in academic skills

Ages 16-21: Open Doors Youth Re-Engagement (EvCC)

What is it?

In-person or online education for students housed on Everett Community College Campus
Can earn a high school diploma, a GED, and college credits, and/or an associate's degree

Profile of student

Students aged 16-21 who has not been successful in traditional school and is credit-deficient
May be below, on, or above grade level in academic skills
