Lake Creates celebrates student art across the district

Our students showed off their creativity at the second annual Lake Creates art show on April 25 at Cavelero Mid High School. The event featured more than 500 works of art from students in preschool through 12th-grade from each school in the district. There were even eight art submissions by Lake Stevens School District staff members.

“Lake Creates highlights the 21st century skills of creativity, critical thinking, communication and collaboration,” said Jody Cain, an Instructional Coach and the organizational mind behind Lake Creates. “These skills are prominent standards in fine arts, across curriculums and prerequisite skills set in today’s job market.”

At the event, participants had the opportunity to create art through a variety of student-led activities. Artists also displayed skills in pottery, culinary and music.

“Our students really took ownership of this event,” said Karen Towey, an art teacher at Cavelero and co-organizer of Lake Creates. “It was wonderful to watch children and adults interact with art at all levels.”

In addition to individual student works, Cain and Towey also established several community partnerships that highlight the importance of art across all educational content areas. This includes:

Snohomish Conservation District
Secondary art students submitted designs to the Snohomish Conservation District that will become yard signs promoting the Plant A Row initiative. Plant A Row encourages local home gardeners to plant extra and donate the harvest to people in need. Student artists also decorated rain barrels for the Conservation District that were auctioned off to support programs and services. More information can be found at

Sound Salmon Solutions
Staff members from Sound Salmon Solutions have partnered with Lake Stevens School District teachers to create activities that help students gain a better understanding of STEAM—Science, Technology, Art and Math. Activities have been ongoing throughout the school year. Learn more at

Lake Stevens Sewer District
Cavelero art students created public service announcements to educate our community on healthy wastewater treatment and the impacts on the sewer system. Students created social media posts that will be shared by the Sewer District. Visit to learn more.

The third annual Lake Creates will take place in the spring of 2020. Stay tuned!
