Lake Stevens School District Board of Directors appoints Dr. Ken Collins as new superintendent

After more than 10 years as Superintendent of Lake Stevens School District and 38 years in the district, Dr. Amy Beth Cook will retire this June. The Lake Stevens School District Board of Directors has appointed Dr. Ken Collins, the district’s current Assistant Superintendent of Teaching & Learning, as the new superintendent beginning July 1, 2021.

“We are incredibly grateful to Dr. Cook for her dedication and leadership throughout her 38-year career in Lake Stevens,” said Mari Taylor, Lake Stevens School District Board President. “It was essential to the Board to hire a successor who possesses a vision for the district, and embraces the culture and values in which we all grow and thrive. We are confident that Dr. Collins will make a smooth transition into this important role, and that he will be an effective and engaging leader for our district. We look forward to a bright future with Dr. Collins.”

Dr. Collins’ work in the district spans more than 31 years. He is currently the Assistant Superintendent of Teaching & Learning—a position he’s held for the past two years. Prior to that, he was the Assistant Superintendent of Human Resource Services for eight years. Before becoming a district administrator, Dr. Collins was Principal of Lake Stevens High School (LSHS) for six years. His educational career began as a high school social studies teacher, with 12 years at LSHS and six years at Marysville Pilchuck High School. Dr. Collins also has an extensive background as a high school athletic coach.

Dr. Collins earned a Doctorate of Education from the University of Washington in 2018. His administrative credentials were obtained from City University. He also earned a Master of Education Administration from Central Washington University, and a Bachelor of Arts in History and Education from Washington State University.

Throughout his time as an Assistant Superintendent, Dr. Collins has been instrumental in Lake Stevens School District’s work to implement the goals and strategies of the Foundation for Excellence

“Dr. Collins is deeply committed to Lake Stevens Schools and our community,” said Taylor. “He is an outstanding educator who centers his thinking on what’s best for kids. Our community of empowered and passionate leaders—both students and adults—will thrive with a superintendent who is able to come alongside us all to pursue learning with passion and joy.”

Dr. Collins and the Board will be working on the terms of a contract agreement, which will be finalized at the Wednesday, Feb. 24 public Board meeting.
